A Forgotten Home in Salento, Reimagined

In Lizzanello, just outside Lecce, a €15,000 property becomes the starting point for an intimate retreat shaped by vaulted ceilings, quiet courtyards and contemporary Mediterranean living.

Some houses immediately reveal their potential. Others require a little more imagination.

Behind a shared courtyard in Lizzanello, a small town just a few kilometres from Lecce, sits a property that currently belongs to the second category.

Abandoned and largely forgotten, it is on the market for just €15,000. At first glance, there is little glamour here. Look beyond its present condition, however, the ingredients of a quintessential Salento home begin to emerge.

Three rooms unfold one after another, beneath the star and barrel vaults characteristic of traditional architecture in Puglia, before reaching a small courtyard at the rear. The footprint is modest, but that is precisely what makes the project interesting.

The proposal is not about adding more. It is about making every existing space work harder.

A kitchen that almost disappears

The house is entered directly through what will become the kitchen—a potentially awkward condition that becomes one of the project's defining ideas.

Rather than designing a conventional kitchen, the cabinetry is conceived almost as architectural joinery: a continuous composition that reads more like an elegant entrance cabinet than a collection of kitchen units. Appliances, storage and everyday necessities disappear behind restrained fronts, allowing the room to maintain the calm of an entrance hall.

The palette takes cues from Japandi interiors and the colours and textures of southern Italy: warm timber, limewashed walls, natural fabrics and tactile stone, combined with simple lines and carefully integrated storage.

A sliding door discreetly reveals a compact WC serving the living spaces. When closed, it becomes part of the architecture rather than another door competing for attention.

The social heart of the house

Moving deeper into the property, the central room becomes the social heart of the home.

Here, a built-in sofa traces the wall, leaving the centre of the room deliberately open. A multifunctional table can shift between breakfast, dinner, work and long evenings spent over a bottle of wine.

It is an uncomplicated space, designed around one of the most appealing aspects of life in Puglia: gathering.

Instead of filling the room with furniture, the project allows the proportions and existing architecture to remain visible. The vaulted ceiling becomes the protagonist; everything underneath it is deliberately quieter.

Sleeping beneath the vault

The most private room sits beneath a generous barrel vault.

A large bed occupies the centre of the space, transforming what is currently an empty room into a surprisingly atmospheric bedroom. From here, an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower creates the level of comfort expected from a contemporary holiday home without disrupting the original sequence of spaces.

The bedroom also becomes the threshold between inside and outside.

And it is here that the smallest part of the property becomes perhaps its most charming.

A courtyard designed as an outdoor room

Through the bedroom, doors open onto a petite private courtyard.

Rather than treating it simply as leftover exterior space, the proposal imagines it as another room of the house—only without a ceiling.

A built-in bathtub sits against the perimeter, connected to a sunbathing platform where one can spend the hottest hours of the afternoon. The existing staircase is retained, climbing towards the rooftop terrace and adding another layer to the home's outdoor life.

Privacy can be created when necessary with a retro-inspired folding screen, allowing the bedroom and courtyard to function together or independently.

It is a small intervention, but one that completely changes the way the house could be experienced: breakfast outside in the morning, a shower after the beach, an afternoon in the sun and dinner on the terrace as the temperature drops.

Small footprint, considered investment

At this scale, good design is less about decoration than choreography.

The sequence of kitchen, guest WC, living room, bedroom, en-suite and courtyard creates distinct levels of privacy despite the home's linear plan. Each room has a clear purpose, while sliding doors, concealed cabinetry and built-in furniture allow the spaces to adapt throughout the day.

That flexibility also makes the property particularly interesting as a short-term rental investment near Lecce.

Rather than creating a large holiday home requiring significant maintenance and management, the project focuses on an intimate pied-à-terre: enough space for a couple—or guests looking for a few days in Salento—with the qualities international travellers increasingly associate with Puglia: historic architecture, outdoor living, simplicity and a strong sense of place.

The renovation itself would be substantial, but relatively contained. The building requires a complete refurbishment, with the principal interventions concentrated on new systems, bathrooms, finishes, lighting and bespoke furniture, while the existing spatial character and vaulted architecture provide the foundation of the design.

For €15,000, the starting point is a forgotten fragment of Salento architecture. With a sensitive restoration and carefully considered interiors, it could become a deeply personal escape from everyday life—or a compact investment property with its own unmistakable identity.

A place for arriving with one suitcase, opening the doors to the courtyard and remembering that, in Puglia, luxury can be remarkably simple.
